About Me

My name is Ben Chrisinger and I’m a 24 year-old graduate student from Warrenton, Virginia.  I’ve spent a lot of academic time thinking about affordable housing – researching, reading, analyzing – and this past summer I decided to experience it in a different way.

Over 3,500 miles and 70 days, I helped lead a Bike & Build trip from Atlantic to Pacific, with the ultimate goal of raising funds and awareness for affordable housing causes across the nation.  This blog was part of the way I started thinking about affordable housing issues before the trip began, and part of the way I shared bits and pieces of the experience along the way.  Now that the journey is over, I’m using the blog as a place to reflect on things I saw and experienced.

I think most Americans believe housing is something we all deserve, but believing is several vital steps short of making it a reality.  Getting affordable housing issues onto the public radar will help build momentum for change, and I’m hoping a journey with Bike & Build will help me better articulate these real issues to others.  I want to challenge people to consider that affordable housing issues might look, sound, and feel differently than they’ve previously thought.

    Dear Ben,

Old Aunt Joan read your blog, don’t worry about sending an email. I hope you are having a great time in PA.

  5. Ben, this is a noble effort on your part. I am impressed with your initiative, action and organizational skills. A check for $ 110 is in the mail from Utility Management Services, Inc. (my company) to sponsor your ride through the state of Utah.

I am a triathlete and do a lot of bicycling. I am envious of your cross country ride. It will be a lot of fun.

I realize you may not recognize my name. I am a high school classmate of your father and one of his winter backpacking friends. He is very proud of you. Obviously, with good reason.

    Good luck and have fun!

Mr. Coughlan – thanks for reaching out. I really appreciate your company’s support and will put you down for Utah. I need to learn a lot more about cycling before May (never done this kind of biking before), so if you know of any useful guides or resources please let me know.

Thank you again for your support – I’ll be sure to let my Dad know you say hello!

  6. Ben, this is awesome. I’ll help spread the word and hopefully you get some bites! 🙂
